From a 3-day desert escape to a 2-week grand tour — how to match your itinerary to the time you have.
The short answer
For a first visit that combines an imperial city, the Sahara and Marrakech, plan on 7 to 10 days. That is enough to enjoy the journey without spending every day in the car. If your time is tight, a focused 3–4 day desert tour is still absolutely worth it; if you have two weeks, you can add the coast, Chefchaouen and the far south.
3–4 days
Perfect for a Sahara-focused trip from Marrakech or Fez: cross the Atlas, sleep in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, and return through the gorges and kasbahs. Ideal if you are extending a city break.
5–7 days
The sweet spot. One-way routes such as Fez to Marrakech via the desert let you see imperial cities, the Todra and Dades gorges, Aït Ben Haddou and the Sahara without backtracking.
8–12 days
Add Chefchaouen, Essaouira or the Zagora dunes, and travel more slowly with extra nights in Fez and Marrakech. This is our most popular length for a complete first trip.
2 weeks or more
The grand tour: the north, both great deserts, the Atlantic coast and the deep south. See our 13–21 day circuits for the full loop.
